Paul Maciel at The Cookery in Johannesburg

Paul Maciel

Paul Maciel’s career began in media, where he learned to shape narrative, build atmosphere, and create memorable and personal experiences. In 2004, he brought that storytelling instinct into the culinary world with Pronto Italian Restaurant – a neighbourhood favourite that became one of Johannesburg’s most awarded and beloved trattorias. Pronto’s success cemented Paul’s belief that food is connection, generosity, and community.

During this time, Paul launched The Secret Jozi Chef, a blog that quickly positioned him as a trusted voice in Johannesburg’s food culture. His writing deepened his relationship with an audience who valued authenticity, creativity, and heart.

In 2016, Paul combined his media background, hospitality experience, and passion for teaching to create The Cookery – Johannesburg’s highest-rated social cooking experience. The Cookery is known for its immersive themed classes, abundant menus, and communal atmosphere.

A social cooking experience rooted in Johannesburg

The Cookery has welcomed guests to Craighall since 2016, bringing together hands-on cooking, generous themed menus, storytelling and hospitality. It is a social cooking experience rather than a formal culinary school: guests take part, cook together and share the meal they have created.
