Terms & Conditions

1. About these terms

These Terms & Conditions apply to the use of The Cookery website and to public cooking class bookings, private cooking events, team building events and client engagement events arranged with The Cookery.

By making a booking, paying an invoice or deposit, or confirming a private event in writing, you agree to these terms together with any event-specific information, quotation, invoice or booking confirmation supplied to you.

2. The Cookery

The Cookery operates from The Woods Shopping Centre, 345 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Website: www.thecookery.co.za
Email: info@thecookery.co.za

Where an event-specific quotation, invoice or booking confirmation contains terms that differ from these general terms, the event-specific written terms will apply to that booking.

3. Public cooking class bookings

Public classes are booked through the online class schedule. A booking is subject to seat availability and is only secured once the required payment has been successfully completed and the booking confirmation has been issued.

Customers are responsible for checking the class date, start time, number of seats selected, price and any event-specific notes before completing payment.

Seat availability shown online may change as bookings are completed. The Cookery does not guarantee a seat until the booking has been successfully processed.

4. Prices and payment

Prices are displayed in South African rand. The booking page or quotation will indicate the applicable price and any VAT treatment.

Public class bookings are payable through the website using the available payment method(s). Private and corporate events are payable according to the quotation or invoice issued for that event.

If a payment is declined, reversed or not received, the booking may remain unconfirmed or may be released.

5. Public class cancellations, transfers and no-shows

More than 7 calendar days before the class: the guest may request a transfer to another available class, a booking credit, or a refund, subject to any reasonable non-recoverable transaction costs like PayFast commision.

Between 72 hours and 7 calendar days before the class: a transfer or booking credit may be offered, subject to availability. A cash refund is not possible.

Less than 72 hours before the class, or for a no-show: the booking is ordinarily non-refundable and non-transferable unless The Cookery agrees otherwise – please discuss with us.

A guest may nominate another person to use their booking, provided The Cookery is informed before the class.

These cancellation and transfer terms remain subject to applicable South African consumer law.

6. Changes or cancellation by The Cookery

The Cookery may need to change a class date, menu, recipe, facilitator, supplier item or other event detail for operational, safety, ingredient-availability or circumstances beyond its reasonable control.

If The Cookery cancels a public class and cannot reasonably proceed, affected guests will be offered an appropriate alternative such as a transfer, credit or refund. The Cookery will communicate material changes using the contact details supplied with the booking.

7. Private cooking events, team building and client engagement

An enquiry does not reserve or confirm an event. A private or corporate event is confirmed only when The Cookery has confirmed the booking in writing and the payment requirements in the relevant quotation or invoice have been met.

Private groups are generally planned for 14 to 28 guests, with up to 30 by arrangement. Smaller groups may be accepted, but a minimum fee equivalent to 14 guests will apply for private use of the venue.

The final event scope, price, deposit, balance due date, guest numbers, menu, optional branding, bar setup and any special arrangements will be recorded in the quotation, invoice or written confirmation.

8. Private-event changes and cancellations

Cancellations that happen 7-14 days before the event, carry a 25% cancellation fee.  Cancellations that happen less than 7 days carry a 50% cancelation fee.  Event postponement that happen less than 14 days before the event carry a R1500 fee, if the event is postponed and then subsequently cancelled the original cancelation fee applies.

Billing is based on final numbers confirmed by the host and not on final number of guests who arrived on the day.

9. Menus, ingredients and substitutions

Menus and recipes are planned carefully, but ingredients are seasonal and supplier availability can change. The Cookery may make reasonable substitutions where needed while aiming to preserve the character and quality of the class or event.

The number and selection of recipes may vary according to the event, group size and operational requirements.

10. Dietary requirements and allergens

The Cookery can accommodate many dietary requirements with advance notice and will make reasonable efforts to guide guests on suitable options.

The Cookery is a shared kitchen and handles ingredients that may include gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts, sesame, fish, shellfish and other allergens. Cross-contact cannot be completely excluded.

Guests with allergies, intolerances or other dietary requirements should provide accurate information before the event. Guests with severe allergies should contact The Cookery in advance so that the team can explain what can and cannot reasonably be accommodated.

11. Drinks and alcohol

For public classes, wine or other drinks may be included where this is stated in the individual event description.

For private events, clients may bring their own bar arrangements. The Cookery is not a licensed liquor outlet and does not charge per-bottle corkage; a bar setup fee may apply based on the group size and the arrangements requested.

Alcohol may only be consumed by persons legally permitted to do so. The Cookery reserves the right to refuse service or participation where behaviour creates a safety risk or materially disrupts the event.

12. Venue, conduct and personal belongings

Guests are expected to follow reasonable safety instructions from The Cookery team and to use the kitchen, equipment and venue responsibly.

The Cookery may ask a person to stop participating or leave the venue where their conduct creates a safety risk, is abusive, or materially interferes with the event.

Guests remain responsible for their personal belongings. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that may not lawfully be excluded.

13. Website information and technical availability

The Cookery aims to keep class information, availability and pricing accurate. If an obvious error is discovered, The Cookery may contact the customer to correct the booking or offer an appropriate alternative.

The website, payment system or booking platform may occasionally be unavailable because of maintenance, network problems or third-party services. The Cookery is not responsible for delays caused by circumstances outside its reasonable control, but will make reasonable efforts to assist affected customers.

14. Personal information

Personal information supplied through the website, booking process or enquiry form is handled in accordance with The Cookery Privacy Policy and applicable South African data-protection law.

15. Consumer rights and limitation

These terms are intended to operate consistently with the Consumer Protection Act, the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act and other applicable South African law.

Nothing in these terms is intended to waive or limit a consumer right that cannot lawfully be waived or limited. Any exclusion or limitation of liability applies only to the extent permitted by law.

16. Intellectual property

The Cookery website content, branding, written material and original creative content may not be copied, republished or commercially exploited without permission, except where the law allows otherwise.

Recipe packs supplied to guests are for personal use unless The Cookery has agreed otherwise in writing.

17. Contact and complaints

Questions about a booking, these terms or a complaint can be sent to info@thecookery.co.za.

The Cookery will make reasonable efforts to resolve booking and service concerns directly and fairly.

18. Changes to these terms

The Cookery may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time. The version published on the website at the time of a booking will apply to that booking, together with any event-specific written terms.
